SUN-PHARMA GOREGAON EAST

A CRECHE STORY

Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Limited is an Indian multinational pharmaceutical company that deals in pharmaceutical formulations and active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) in India and America. The company has its headquarters in Mumbai and produces specialty and generic products targeting a wide spectrum of chronic and acute treatments. In 1983, the company was initially started by Mr. Dilip Shanghvi to treat only psychiatry ailments. Later in 1987, cardiology products were introduced, by gastroenterology products in 1989. As of 2018, the company is the largest chronic prescription company in India and a market leader in psychiatry, neurology, gastroenterology, cardiology, orthopaedics, ophthalmology and nephrology. As of 2015, the company had an annual turnover of 12 billion dollars.

EXTENDING THE HEALING TOUCH

Ranbaxy Rural Development Trust (RRDT) was established in 1978 when “Health for All” was adopted as a national objective in India. That year, the first mobile healthcare van was rolled out in the state of Punjab with the objective to deliver primary healthcare to underprivileged sections of society in remote villages. Now called as Sun Pharma Community Healthcare Society (SPCHS) since 2016. SPCHS is registered under the Societies Registration Act of 1860 & also registered under the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) 1976 by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Govt. of India. SPCHS functions as an independent body touching the lives of over 650,000 people with a fleet of mobile healthcare vans in the states of Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Sikkim. The main objective of this initiative is to enhance access of basic healthcare to the marginalized communities and more vulnerable sections of the society.

EMPOWERING WOMEN

With their larger goal of making women more empowered, it was critical to find a solution to achieving longevity in the work life of women. With the growing needs of the company, it became integral to be able to attract new and skilled talent and retain trained women who had been with the company for a while and built loyalty. It was important to offer them a viable alternative to leaving careers to take care of their children, or the stress of finding a consistent support system, which would enable them to continue working. Sun Pharmaceuticals was one of the first few companies to implement an ‘Onsite day- care centre’ at their premises. In association with World Of Children (WOC), they inaugurated the ‘Crèche’ on January 6, 2018. This onsite day care facility, which is open to all its employees, operates from Monday through Friday and two Saturdays in a month. The facility has a full time Teacher and Nannies, to care for the children. Internal studies show all employees are happy with this initiative. Sun Pharmaceuticals was one of the few companies where admission of infants was also actively sought; highlighting the low turnaround time for returning mothers. Currently the Day care centre is operating at a a fair occupancy rate and 100 % of the users claimed that the day care had benefited their lives positively and aided their careers.

ETHICS

Ethical behaviour is intrinsic to our business and has been a part of our legacy since inception, as envisioned by our Founder, Jamsetji Tata. He believed that a business must operate in a manner such that it respects the rights of all its stakeholders and creates overall value for society. The values and principles that have governed our business for a century are enshrined in the Tata Code of Conduct (TCOC). This Code serves as the ethical roadmap for Tata employees of all our Group companies and is testament to our determination to help our employees understand their duties and commitments towards shared values and principles.

THE CRECHE INITIATIVE

Tata Steel Officers Colony houses officers with 43 families presently staying there. Most of the other employees stay in housing complexes in nearby areas and some travel from nearby Mumbai. Amongst the employee wards 29 children are in the age group of 6 months to 6 years who can avail day care facilities. The On-site day care model was adopted at Tarapur to bridge the gap between a lack of professionally managed day care with an inclusive learning goal and environment for children. World Of Children runs a Creche with a beautiful garden, outdoor play area in a building -Himmagiri within the complex.
